Jewelry not only holds a special place in our culture and in our own minds, but also in history. For years jewelry has symbolized many things. Perhaps it meant wealth, or perhaps it stood for a certain status or position. Nowadays, jewelry does not play so much a part in wealth or status as it does in culture.
For example, couples generally use gold and diamond rings to symbolize engagement. This is further romanticized when you hear that the bigger the diamond, the more you love the girl! Of course, this is sort of a marketing ploy used by the jewelry companies to get you to buy bigger rings, but many of us believe it in at least one form or another.
What does jewelry mean to you? Do you have a necklace which is a family heirloom? Do you have a tiny stone hung on a piece of string that you would not sell for a million dollars because of how much it means to you? Do you have a diamond ring that you would throw away if you had the chance? Many people have many different views on jewelry, which is why jewelry is one of the most diverse and interesting subjects you can get into.
