Costume jewelry is a type of jewelry which is made from less valuable and low cost material. The name “costume jewelry” is because of the reason for which it is used i.e. to compliment any fashionable “costume”. It comes with different names like fake jewelry, fallalery, fashion jewelry and junk jewelry.
Costume jewelry is made from things like base metal, synthetic, glass or plastic stones which are very cheap and easily affordable in place of the jewelry made up of precious and heavily valuable material like gems and precious metals. It is considered as the first jewelry for masses, for ornamentation, which helps to complement a particular dress or “costume”.
This very cheap and disposable jewelry came into existence in 1930s which meant to pair up with specific outfit. It is mainly used in fashion and opposed to the real and fine jewelry which is primarily regarded as the keepsakes, investments and collectibles as it is for the purpose to accessorize the particular garment or clothing.
In early times, the costume jewelry was made from inexpensive gemstones like rhinestones or Lucite which was set in silver, pewter, nickel or brass. Whereas the modern jewelry incorporates a variety of materials such as high end crystals, cubic Zirconium simulated diamonds and many other semi-precious stones are used in place of precious gemstones.
Metals which are used in the costume jewelry include silver or gold plated brass and vermeil or sterling silver in many cases. To make low priced jewelry manufactures may still use gold plating over pewter, nickel or any other material. And the items manufactured in other countries outside United States ma contain lead sometimes. Materials like plastic, wood, leather and acrylic are used in some pieces of costume jewelry.
Some of the well known names of brands in the costume jewelry are; Dior, Chanel, Monet, Crown Trifari, Coventry, Napier and Corocraft.
